COFFEE & SESSION PABLO is a jazz kissa located in Natori City, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan.
This establishment weaves special stories while playing jazz and brews aromatic coffee for its guests.
This shop, which opened in 1984 as “Jazz in Pablo,” remained closed after losing its master in the tsunami of the Great East Japan Earthquake.
Then, six years later in December 2017, through a miraculous turn of events,
it was able to celebrate its day of revival.
The
sign reads “COFFEE & SESSION PABLO”.
This is an old yet new jazz cafe, inherited by two creators.
The story of PABLO’s revival
begins with a 4,000-kilometer journey across America.

Jazz Kissa
Immerse yourself in the soul of Japanese listening culture with Jazz Kissa, an expansive photographic exploration of Japan’s iconic jazz cafés, known as Jazz Kissa. The book is the result of over fifteen years of dedicated work by photographer and cultural historian Katsumasa Kusunose, who has meticulously documented these intimate spaces and the people who keep their spirit alive.
Pablo’s page is on pages 167 to 169.

JAZZKISSA 2015-2019
This is the third photo collection by Katsumasa Kusunose, featuring jazz cafés across Japan that he visited and photographed. It introduces 56 establishments shot over a five-year period from 2015 to 2019, presented entirely in full-color, nostalgic photographs. Some of the cafés have since closed, making this book a valuable archival record—a “memory of jazz cafés” and an important historical document.
Pablo’s page is on pages 108 to 109.

GATEWAY TO
JAZZ KISSA vol.1
The Great East Japan Earthquake that occurred on March 11, 2011 caused enormous damage to the area. The magnitude 9 earthquake was the largest in the history of observation around Japan, and the area along the Pacific coast called “Sanriku” was devastated by the tsunami, which swept the entire city. However, shortly after this tragedy, jazz kissas reopened in various parts of Tohoku. This special feature is the story of jazz kissas in Tohoku that has revived from this catastrophe.
Pablo’s page is on pages 42 to 51.
